Department of Radiology, Toxicology and Population Protection

Department of Radiology, Toxicology and Population Protection

Who are we?

The tasks of the Department of Radiology, Toxicology and Population Protection can be divided into two basic directions: teaching and research.

In the educational sphere, the department guarantees three fields of study: the bachelor degree courses "Radiology Assistant" and "Population Protection with a Focus on CBRNE" and the related master study course "Civil Emergency Preparedness". Teaching in all of these fields takes place in full-time and the combined form of study.

Members of the department are involved as principal investigators or co-investigators in research projects carried out in the framework of national grant agencies.

The research activities of the Department of Radiology, Toxicology and Population Protection are focused on the areas of crisis management, civil protection, toxicology, radiobiology, radiology, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine and biophysics. The department cooperates with a number of prominent Czech and foreign workplaces, both in the mutual exchange of teachers as well as in ensuring students practice in the above fields of study.

From the Czech workplaces these mainly include:

  • Fire Rescue Corps of the South Bohemian region
  • Regional Police Directorate of South Bohemian Region
  • South Bohemian Regional Authority
  • Temelin Nuclear Power Plant
  • The State Office for Nuclear Safety
  • The State Institute of Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Protection, v. v. i.
  • Institute of Population Protection of Lázně Bohdaneč
  • Hospital in České Budějovice, a.s.
  • Outpatient clinic MEDIPONT, s. r. o., in České Budějovice
  • Some Prague hospitals (Na Homolce Hospital, Motol University Hospital )

What do we do and for whom?

The department ensures the conceptual, organizational and realization of teaching in the fields of:

  • Population Protection with a Focus on CBRNE
  • Civil Emergency Preparedness
  • Radiology Assistant

By completing a bachelor's field of Population Protection with a Focus on CBRNE, students will gain the necessary knowledge of the issue of crisis management with a focus on emergency and crisis situations, particularly in relation to chemical, biological, radiological, radiological and explosive substances that act on both human beings and flora and fauna. They are familiarized with the operation of various components of the integrated rescue system and with the running of workplaces focused on the detection of radiological, chemical or biological agents.

The follow-up master's degree in Civil Emergency Preparedness is two years. Civil Emergency Preparedness is a field comprising a summary of civilian control, planning and control processes and relationships that administrative bodies, local authorities and authorized institutions prepare to deal with emergencies and crisis situations. It contains a set of tasks and activities to identify the needs and possible solutions of crisis situations while respecting the given political, legal and economic conditions and with an effective use of the available resources, which the state is able to ensure for the safeguarding of internal and external security. The field of study allows students a choice of two modules. In addition to the common courses, students will be able to choose either:

▪ OM module (economic-medical-organizational profile) or

▪ RT module (radio-toxicity profile.)

The aim of the bachelor study field Radiology Assistant is the preparation of academically qualified medical personnel authorized to perform radiological imaging and radiation procedures and the application of ionizing radiation in the processes used during medical irradiation. The graduates of the study program have broad theoretical knowledge from the medical, social and other related disciplines, enabling them to quickly adapt to the conditions of professional practice.

Why do we exist?

Education

The department educates high-quality and confident graduates with all the necessary knowledge and skills for their profession for the applied sector of education.

Science and research:

In the field of scientific research, the work of the department focuses on three main areas. In the first one, the effect of permanently present NOx in the environment on the human body, that are a result of either natural processes or human activities, are studied in order to suggest ways to minimize their consequences. In the second one, the work of the department focuses on the study of the interaction of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. In the third one, the influence of the psyche of human behavior in dealing with emergencies and the possibility of minimizing any negative effects caused mainly by erroneous information to the public by the mass media is evaluated.

What are our aims?

The objectives of the department

The aim of the department is to create an attractive and friendly environment for higher education students in bachelor's and master's fields of study, and thanks to offers that reflect the changing demands of the labor market, also a strong chance for the application of the education in the professional life of students. The long term goal of the department is the constant improvement of study and the improvement of learning conditions based on the improvement of the application of graduates in practice, whether it's in a practical profession or an area of research. Increasing the attractiveness of the study of the guaranteed field enables the creation of conditions for the professional growth of students and the increase of the share of talented students.

The main tasks of the department

  • deepening cooperation with practice for the purpose of effective knowledge transfer;
  • deepening international cooperation with universities and scientific workplaces abroad.
